In the late nineties/early millennium San Francisco experienced a massive displacement of its residents and communities -- including its arts community -- as the high tech industry moved into neighborhoods such as the Mission and recruited more and more of its employees from outside of the Bay Area – much like what is happening today .  In addition to the many residents who are being forced out of their homes and neighborhoods, many local businesses and social service and arts organizations -- agencies that act as integral parts of the foundation to the neighborhoods they serve -- are being shuffled onto the street.

In 2000 Megan Wilson and Gordon Winiemko created an installation at the San Francisco Art Commission’s Grove Street site as a direct message to the City -- including the "leaders," sitting in their secure offices across the street – that the current state of business-as-usual was not acceptable, nor was it sustainable for San Francisco's cultural community - WE LOSE SPACE/YOU LOSE CULTURE!  The installation included the voices and images of many of those in the arts community who had spent years contributing not only to San Francisco’s culture, but also to the City's economic base as the draw for the millions of visitors who flock to San Francisco every year - individuals and organizations then – and now - threatened by the thriving economy they helped to create.

Wilson and Winiemko interviewed a cross section of the SF artistic community: from dancers like Keith Hennessey, Rachel Kaplan, and Jo Kreiter ... to visual artists like Geoff Chadsey, Meg Mack, Benji Whalen, Scott McLeod and Aaron Noble ... to media artists like Nicole Hickman ... to musicians like Mark Gregory and Will Johnson (both kicked out of Downtown Rehearsal) ... and to arts administrators like Jaime Cortez (Galleria de la Raza), Krissy Keefer (Dance Mission), Trisha Lagaso (Southern Exposure Gallery), Jill Weinberg Pfeiffer (Oasis For Girls), and Michael Medo Whitson (848 Community Space).
