Megan Wilson and Andrew Schoultz

For this exhibition at Bucheon Gallery, Andrew Schoultz’s and Megan Wilson’s work came together to collide with and compliment one another – tug at and tease. Schoultz created an impressive body of new works, grayer and more frenetic than in the past. While Wilson’s maniacal garden of technicolor blooms continued to grow, providing an equally feverish, yet contrasting pitch to the show.

Megan Wilson:

Power, gender identity (history, rituals, sexuality, beauty, and vulnerability), obsession, and the pervasion and perversion of consumption are overarching themes in Megan Wilson’s projects and installations. In her project Random Acts of Beauty (2002), Wilson traveled to Tokyo, Japan and Yogykarta, Indonesia to create unexpected installations within the urban landscape of these mega city centers. Wilson’s paper cutouts of brightly colored flowers placed on sidewalks and streets acted as interruptions to the mundane automaton routine and the barrage of urban popular signage and advertising.

Andrew J. Schoultz:

Andrew J. Schoultz’s murals and paintings are a mix of playful whimsy and an intensely sharp social/political vision. They are filled with fleets of cartoonish birds, suitcases in hand, flying the coop – forced out by the laws of progress and greed. Elephants in ties march drudgingly across a desolate landscape, individuals beset by conformist forces.  Many of his paintings are homages to the people and places that have been dislocated in the war for space. Others are more about the daily grind and the struggles of anyone trying to make a living in a culture that values consumption above all else.
