Sunset

Sunset was inspired by Wilson’s ongoing interest in the complex relationships and evolution between conventional/ structured practices and environments (physical and psychological) and those of a dissenting and organic nature:

Visually for me this has translated into the intersections and historical contexts between fine art, design, architecture, and traditional crafts. 

I painted the background of the wall with the standard templates for interior design layouts (taken from one of my mother's old “Sunset” decorating books), using colors that were popular at the time. The wall was then organically layered with textiles cut from curtains of the seventies, quilling (a traditional paper craft that I was taught by my grandmother), and cutout pictures of painted owls – all referenced a breaking away from the traditional uses of these materials. I laid the floor with modular carpeting and placed organically shaped layers of plywood covered with suede that I had burned flower designs into. 

Sunset used mychildhood memories of the transformation of my mother and our home during the feminist movement of the seventies to explore these relationships and the tension between cool minimalism and expressive pattern and decoration.
